Canada's Tahltan Nation Says No More Jade Mining

One of Canada's indigenous groups, the Tahltan Nation of British Columbia, has declared that all jade mining within its territory must cease. The Nation is located in prime jade country, the Dease Lake area.
Some 25 companies are active in jade business in the area. The Tahltan Nation apparently seeks to "co-manage" commercial operations, which would seem to provide them with a substantial piece of jade action there.
Making a cultural claim to jade or other resources is not uncommon among First Peoples of various locations, for example no jade can be mined in New Zealand except by Maori people and may not be exported without government approval.
Here is the Tahltan story.

Big Sale of Jade and Other Gems in Myanmar

The 55th Myanmar Gems Emporium began June 20 and runs for ten days, with over 3,100 gem merchants from China, Thailand, Canada and the United States are attending the event. Most overseas merchants are from China.
According to Xinghua news agency, on sale are 6,795 jade lots, 336 gem lots and 360 pearl lots.
Myanmar Times reported that this year a ten percent fee will be charged up front on reserved items. In the past, one in four sales apparently has fallen through as prospective buyers walked away leaving their five percent deposit behind -- so the reserved lot went unsold.

Big Nephrite Jade Boulder Beauty For Sale

Over THIRTEEN POUNDS, probably 14 with the stand, a very nice wooden bowl-type stand.
This would be a centerpiece conversation focal point for any collection, gallery, room ornament.
Of course it is a beautiful dark green jade with swaths of lighter green as seen, if you are a carver or cutter you could make something of it for sure. Like, a lifetime of cabochons. Details on my Etsy site if unsold.

Mining Technology Surveys the 23$Billion Gemstone Market

Here is a portion of a report that may be seen in full, covering many gem subjects, at the Mining Technology site (link).

Jade in Myanmar

"Jade is the second-biggest contributor to the global gemstone market, accounting for $3bn-$6bn, and Myanmar is the world’s largest jade producer. The country’s output accounts for 70%, or 30,000t, of jade each year. This is worth up to $31bn and accounts for as much as half of the country’s GDP. However, historically, little of this wealth has trickled down to the population and much of the people live in poverty.
"Following the election of State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi in 2015, a moratorium was passed on all mining licences. This, together with unrest over the past decade has hit the jade market hard, but despite disruption Myanmar remains by far the largest producer. Growth in jade mines in British Columbia, Canada has helped to fill the gap, which now meets 8.3% of global jade production."

Museum Heist of Jade Objects May Have Been "To Order"

The theft of a number of culturally priceless artifacts of jade and gold from a British museum has the look of being done on order, meaning a collector was behind it, or perhaps a broker who knows of a clandestine buyer. It is thought that this may often be the case in art thefts where the loot is destined for display in secret hidden galleries shared only by the buyer or close pals. Here is the story so far...(link).

An Excellent Feature Article on Burma Jadeite

Sold for $9.3-million
This link will take you to part two of an excellent feature article on Burma jadeite compiled by several experts in the field. The first part was, to me, very interesting but nowhere near as informative as this part. It covers how Burmese jadeite is mined, traded, graded, cut, faked and, as finished gems, sold at prices ranging into millions of dollars.

New Book Focused on Xinjiang Hotan Famous Jade

It is doubtful most westerners know what is meant in references to Xinjiang jade so, if it were published in English, this could be a helpful book for them. As it stands there is no mention of an English edition so such readers will have to be content with this feature story, an assurance of the special nature of Xinjiang jade.
The book is titled "A History of Xinjiang Hotan Jade Mining," by Yu Ming, head of the Hotan Jade Trading Association of Xinjiang.
One observation from the article: "...prices for the precious stone have gone through the roof in recent years." Yu's research was mainly historical but he also adventured to remote sites: "We had to wade through rivers, climb cliffs and sleep in the open," says Yu.
Xinjiang an autonomous territory in northwest China, is a vast region of deserts and mountains. It is home of many jade merchants.
