The 55th Myanmar Gems Emporium began June 20 and runs for ten days, with over 3,100 gem merchants from China, Thailand, Canada and the United States are attending the event. Most overseas merchants are from China.
According to Xinghua news agency, on sale are 6,795 jade lots, 336 gem lots and 360 pearl lots.
Myanmar Times reported that this year a ten percent fee will be charged up front on reserved items. In the past, one in four sales apparently has fallen through as prospective buyers walked away leaving their five percent deposit behind -- so the reserved lot went unsold.
